Florida Fishing Guides: Great Guides and Books on Florida Fishing

Take a tour around any Florida bookstore or fishing supply store and you'll soon realize that Florida fishing guides are everywhere. Books on how to fish the flats, succeed at deep sea fishing or the best pier fishing locations in Florida are widely available.

But, are these guides? Do they offer detailed information on real fishing spots? What about specific how-to's for various fish species?

Many don't, but there are three Florida fishing guides that should probably be on every Florida fisher's bookshelf. They are;

Fish Florida Saltwater: Better Than Luck – The Foolproof Guide to Florida Saltwater Fishing
Author: Boris Arnov
Publication Year: 2002
ISBN: 0884150022

This is a well-organized, easy to read and follow introductory guide to saltwater fishing in Florida. Divided by species of fish, the book covers techniques, bait and places to fish that's highly customized for the inshore fisherman.

One drawback of Fish Florida Saltwater is that the fish illustrations are in black and white, making it hard for less experienced fishers or fishers new to Florida to identify certain species. A few color photos or graphics would make species identification much easier.

Good Luck and Tight Lines: A Sure-Fire Guide to Florida's Inshore Fishing
Author: R.G. Schmidt
Publication Year: 1996
ISBN: 088415186

Though a little out-of-date, this Florida fishing guide book has a lot of info that will never go out-of-date, particularly for tracking and catching snook, cobia, flounder, redfish and tapion.

The book covers beach fishing, pier fishing and boat fishing in Florida's inshore salt waters. On top of being informative, the book's also a fun read with entertaining passages and light humor to keep you interested. Overall, it's a good buy, but could use updating.

Fishing Florida's Flats: A Guide to Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit and Much More
Author: Jan S. Maizler
Publication Year: 2007
ISBN: 0813031451

Up-to-date, detailed and extremely informative, Fishing Florida's Flats is like a must-have manual for any shallow water angler. The best feature of the book is that it includes directions to known “hot spots” and great fishing locations, a must-have for new fishers to the area. This is information that you won't find online.

The book covers a lot, like tackles, spotting tactics, techniques and other critical info, but it can get a little heavy. Instead of light narrative or an easy going pace, the book is fairly technical and get bogged down at points. Fishing Florida's Flats is one of those Florida fishing guides that's weighed down by too much information.
